Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
and Hand Pain
If you have experienced numbness in the palm, hand or fingers or if hand or finger pain wakes you in the middle of the night or if you notice weakness in your grip you may be suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome.
Carpal tunnel syndrome gets its name from a tunnel in the wrist which holds nerves and tendons. When swelling occurs in the wrist, it puts pressure on the nerve in the tunnel.
Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by injury to the wrist or repeated motions or overuse.
Arm, hand and wrist movements, pressure at the base of the palm and vibrating tools can put the carpal tunnel at risk. Jobs that require the same motions over and over put workers at risk by stressing the carpal tunnel.
People with carpal tunnel syndrome have pain in the wrist and numbness in one or both hands. These sensations may even wake the person at night.
In addition to the carpal tunnel, there are several locations in the arm, shoulder, elbow and neck that can pinch the nerves cause pain in the hand. In addition the hand may feel weak or clumsy.
Since these conditions can severely limit hand or wrist strength, range of motion and physical activity, it is important that it be treated early. If you think that you may be at risk for carpal tunnel syndrome or may be suffering from some other problem in the arm, wrist or hand call a chiropractic doctor.
Research shows that 50-75% of all patients with carpal tunnel syndrome can be treated without surgery. Chiropractic treatment includes manipulation of the wrist, arm and neck along with stretching and exercises. Ultrasound and muscle stimulation along with nutrition can be used. A chiropractic doctor may suggest easier or better ways to do things without stressing the wrist or hand.
Early detection is the best solution. Follow the advice of your chiropractic doctor who is committed to relieving pain and restoring use of your wrist and hand.
